Black Mountain Zen Group (BMZG) is a lay Zen Buddhist practice group located in Canberra, Australia. Formerly known as the Canberra Zen Group, BMZG holds weekly zen meditation evenings, half-day and all-day zen practice days and an annual week-long zen retreat.
Our style of zen practice is in the Diamond Sangha tradition which was founded by Robert Aitken Roshi (https://sites.google.com/site/robertaitkenroshi/). The Diamond Sangha practice style has origins in both the Rinzai and Soto sects of Japan.
Our teacher is Jeff Ward, who received transmission as a zen teacher in the Diamond Sangha tradition from Subhana Barzaghi and Paul Maloney, both of the Sydney Zen Centre, in 2017.
Orientation is available for students with no or little meditation or zen practice experience. Practitioners from other traditions are welcome to come and sit with us. For more information contact
